The origin of Attractions is the cinematographic form of the same name; it appeared at the very beginnings of film, in the form of short films.
This form is focused on literally grabbing the attention of the spectator, sacrifying certain principles of reality and assaulting the spectator with a sensorial or psychological action.
Developed by the Russian film director Sergei Eisenstein, the concept of a “montage of attractions” consists of the juxtaposition and linking of separate images, stacked next to each other but deliberately devoid of narration, while encouraging the association of the spectator’s own ideas and reactions.
Here, in the black box configuration of the stage, this flow of images also flows over and through the bodies of the performers who execute the sequencing of these attractions at each performance.
In Attractions, more than 80 micro-sketches are performed, some in the form of cabaret numbers, abstract landscapes and shortened, off the wall fictions, borrowed from film and other media.
The idea of the montage, its running time, the musical and acoustic rhythms, using more than 2000 distinct audio files, setting up an attempt at a dialectic – whereas the aesthetic of the 180 costumes worn in turn by the performers, generate a series of images, of twisted memories, in rolling waves, reminding us inevitably of certain elements of our daily lives, in the abundance of information being projected and received… a stream flowing through this strange journey, both familiar and unknown, individual and collective.
